Holidays to the Corn Islands

Located approximately 45 miles off Nicaragua’s east coast, within its beautiful Caribbean waters, are the little known and scarcely visited Corn Islands.

Comprising two islands, 30 minutes apart by boat, Big Corn (aka Great Corn) measures just 4 square miles while Little Corn barely exceeds 1 square mile.

As befits their idyllic Caribbean location, both islands boast picture-postcard, white, sandy beaches together with lush, tropical interiors.

Big Corn can easily be explored by bicycle or moped while Little Corn, which is entirely devoid of motorized transport, positively invites exploration on foot.

Unlike the vast majority of Nicaragua, which was colonized by the Spanish, its Caribbean coast and the Corn Islands fell under the influence of the British so English, or at least a hybrid Anglo – Miskito version of English, is the dominant language.

With its obvious tourist appeal, the great mystery of the Corn Islands are that they attract so few visitors, both international & domestic.

In a form of Catch 22, there are very few hotels on either island and, with air the only way to reach the islands, the only flights to the islands (the only airport is on Big Corn) are on 12 seater aircraft from Managua.

Things To See & Do In The Corn Islands

Flop on the beach

Visitors to the Corn Islands are primarily there to relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches on both islands. The best beach on Big Corn is probably Arenas Beach, on its sheltered western coast, while the best beach on Little Corn is Otto Beach on its northern tip.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

Snorkeling and scuba diving are available on both islands but is generally recognised to be better – and better served by operators – on Little Corn.

Explore Big Corn by bicycle or moped

It is easy to rent bicycles or mopeds on Big Corn, the majority of roads are in good condition and traffic light. If hiring a bicycle, please note that the road gets pretty steep on the island’s southern tip!

Eat lobster

Aside from the tiny tourist industry, the main industry in the Corn Islands is fishing, especially for lobster. To protect stocks, there is now a defined fishing season and, if you’re lucky enough to be there at that time, plenty of delicious and (relatively) cheap lobster
