Located on Nicaragua’s south west Pacific Coast, San Juan del Sur has followed that well-trodden path of a small fishing village being discovered by early backpackers before, eventually, everyone else catches on to its many charms.

Situated on a picturesque, natural bay that rises up steeply on all sides, the broad, sheltered beach offers calm swimming conditions although, in truth, San Juan del Sur is a town with a beach rather than a beach resort.

Lining the beach are a number of restaurants that serve up seafood with a view while, in the streets behind, you will find cheaper, slightly more interesting eats as well as a good selection of bars and funky shops, the latter very much focused on a youthful, surf scene.

Clients looking for a traditional beach break at the end of a tour of Nicaragua should probably look further afield, even if only nearby Morgan’s Rock.
