Holidays to Ometepe Island

The magical, faintly mystical island of Ometepe sits in the middle of Lake Nicaragua and is dominated by the towering twin peaks of volcanoes Concepcion & Maderas.

Covering an area of over 100 square miles, Ometepe is the world’s largest island-within-a lake but, with a population of only around 35,000, it remains gloriously unspoiled and undeveloped, with agriculture still the dominant source of income, followed by low-key tourism.

Even getting to Ometepe feels like the beginning of a great adventure, with the atmospheric but somewhat decrepit old ferry slowly chugging its way across from the mainland.

Aside from its numerous, natural attractions, Ometepe is also a great place to relax and do very little. The east of the island, especially Playa Santo Domingo, enjoys cooling breezes off the lake and is ideal for long walks along near deserted beaches.

Things To See & Do In Ometepe

There is enough to see and do on Ometepe to spend at least three nights on the island, possibly more if you need to recover from climbing a volcano or are just looking to read a book with a rum / beer to keep you hydrated.

Climb a volcano

Ometepe has a choice of volcanos to climb, the near perfectly conical Concepion or Maderas. Both are challenging hikes so you’ll need to be fit and healthy to get to the top.

Charco Verde

This beautiful, privately owned reserve has a number of walking trails where you can enjoy a wide variety of flora and fauna in the company (pre-booked) of an expert guide. There is also a butterfly sanctuary by the entrance.

Ojo de Agua

Ojo de Agua is a beautiful, crystal clear spring pool that is fed by an underground river originating from Maderas volcano. The pool has now been split into two separate swimming areas and, with bathrooms, food and drink all available on-site, one can easily spend the entire day here.

Petroglyphs & Museum

Nicaragua may not feature the ancient Mayan ruins of its northern neighbours but Ometepe is home to a number of mysterious petroglyphs that are dotted around the island and which date back to the original, indigenous population. The island’s tiny El Ceibo museum also features a small but fascinating collection of ornaments.

Cascada de San Ramon

This 40 metre high waterfall is a popular attraction and is reached via a 60 minute + hike along a beautiful trail. The last section of the trail is relatively steep but you’ll be rewarded with both the dramatic sight of the waterfall as well as the option to cool off in the natural pool.

Kayaking

The River Istian is accessed from the east side of the island and is popular place to enjoy a kayaking trip within the mangroves. Together with your guide, you will be able to spot a wide variety of birdlife as well as the resident caimans. Water levels vary depending on the time of year with this being an activity that is best experienced at the start of the dry season.
