Apoyo Lagoon
Holidays to Apoyo Lagoon
Located a short drive from Granada, Apoyo Lagoon (Laguna Apoyo in Spanish) was declared a Natural Reserve in 1991 and is a popular day trip from Granada, Masaya and even Managua.
With a spattering of decent accommodation options, it is also possible to spend a night or two.
As is immediately apparent as soon as one lays eyes on it, Apoyo Lagoon is actually an endorheic lake that occupies the caldera of an extinct volcano.
Almost perfectly round, with a diameter of 6 ½ kms, the lagoon is currently some 175 metres deep although that depth has reduced since the turn of the century due to reduced rainfall.
The water within the lagoon is said to be the cleanest in Nicaragua and, as a result, construction of new houses has been prohibited while motorized boats are also banned on the lake.

Things To See & Do In Apoyo Lagoon
Determining what to do in and around Apoyo Lagoon largely depends on whether you are passing through, on a day trip from Granada or spending a night or two in a local hotel.
Enjoy the views
For those visitors who don’t plan to spend the night, and even for those that are, the most spectacular views over the lagoon are to be had from the village of Catarina, one of the so-called Pueblos Blancos. The views from Pacaya Lodge are a very close second.
Have a swim in the lake
If you fancy a swim in the lake’s pristine waters, you can either stay at Casa Marimba for a night or two or, if visiting for the day, arrange a day pass. In either case, we can arrange all the necessary transport.
Enjoy a hike
There are a number of hikes of different lengths (and levels of difficulty) that we can arrange with return transport and experienced guides.
Visit Masaya volcano and market
For clients overnighting at Apoyo Lagoon, we can also arrange a private, half day tour to nearby Masaya volcano (very much a live volcano) as well as the handicraft market in Masaya town.
