Guacimo Lodge
South East Nicaragua, Nicaragua
Rustic Hideaway
Located along the banks of the iconic Rio San Juan, and just outside the vast Indio Maiz Biosphere Reserve, Guacimo Lodge is arguably Nicaragua’s foremost nature-focused hotel.
Set within 50 hectares of primary and secondary rainforest, simply getting to Guacimo Lodge is all part of the adventure, a picturesque 2 ½ hour river trip from San Carlos on Lake Managua.
Once at the hotel, clients have numerous options for exploring the surrounding region. These trips can either be booked locally or in advance, with examples including…..
Kayaking Trip – Kayak along the San Juan river before entering the Indio Maiz Reserve via the Bartola river. Enroute, take in both locals going about their lives as well as varied wildlife within the Reserve.
El Castillo – Visit the nearby, historic fortress which once guarded the river against pirate attacks. There will also be time to visit a nearby cocoa cooperative including a fresh mug of very local hot chocolate.
Zompopo Trail – With a local guide, this 3-hour hike through the forest will introduce you to the rich flora and fauna of the jungle including spider and / or white-faced capuchin monkeys, not to mention a wide variety of birdlife.
Jungle Night Tour – Shortly after sunset, head into the jungle with your guide for an approximate 2-hour tour.
River Night Tour – Quietly navigate the river with your guide, seeking out caimans and many other creatures of the night!
Birdwatching Tour – The Indio Maiz Reserve is home to over 221 bird species and, taking in the trail through both dense jungle and open spaces, your expert guide will be on hand to help you spot as many as possible.

Besides the various excursions on offer, Guacimo Lodge is a great place to relax, soak up the unspoiled setting and enjoy the views over the river.
There is also a small pool to cool off in and a shared, open-air lounge space in which to read a book or chat with your fellow guests.
The lodge also features a wonderful restaurant serving overwhelmingly local & seasonal cuisine including fresh fish from the river and vegetables & livestock etc from local villages.
In terms of accommodation, there are just 6 rooms at Guacimo Lodge – 3 Deluxe Cabanas and 3 larger Superior Bungalows. All 6 are made from local wood and feature a Queen or King size bed, outdoor showers and balconies with river views.
Important – Please note that staying at Guacimo Lodge is very much a back to nature experience. The bungalows are located on a hill which requires walking up and down steps. There is no power in the bungalows (besides battery powered USB chargers), no a/c, no fans and no hot water. WIFI is also limited and unreliable.
