Hotel El Convento
Leon, Nicaragua
Heritage
One of the most atmospheric hotels in Central America, Hotel El Convento is a colonial-style property that, as the name sort of suggests, was originally a monastery
Dating back to the mid-17th century, the San Francisco monastery lay abandoned for many years and parts of it were demolished. As with the parts of the monastery that form the modern day hotel, the church also survived demolition and is located next to, but outside of, the hotel.
Entering Hotel El Convento via its private driveway, the first thing one can’t help but notice is the beautiful courtyard garden that forms the centre piece of the hotel.

To the right hand side of this courtyard are the bar area and restaurant – breakfast is served on the terrace overlooking the courtyard – as well as a vast open lounge area filled with antique furniture and beautiful artefacts. Indeed, pretty much wherever you go in the hotel, you will find corridors and nooks filled with art and curios.
Tucked away at the back of the hotel, is the small pool, perfect for a cooling swim after exploring the steaming streets of Leon.
In total, Hotel El Convento features some 32 rooms. Of those, 21 are defined as Executive rooms, 8 as Premiere rooms (facing inwards onto the garden), 1 as a Family room, 1 as a Mini Suite and 1 as a Suite. With the exception of the Suite, all rooms feature 2 Queen beds.
Rooms are spacious but, perhaps in keeping with the history of the building, furnished in a distinctly somber, colonial style. All rooms come with a/c, tv, fridge and safe but no outside space. Rooms facing out towards the street may experience some traffic noise so we recommend the Premiere rooms which face inwards.
As with all our featured hotels in Leon, Hotel El Convento is located a short stroll from the main square and within easy walking distance of all the city’s major sites of interest, especially the old home of Ruben Dario and the excellent Ortiz Gurdian art gallery.
