Hotel Casa Del Balam
Merida, Mexico
Heritage
One of Merida’s original tourist hotels’, the Casa del Balam is also one of its best located, just a short walk from the city’s main square.
The main part of the building was once a private house belonging to Don Fernando Barbachano, one of the pioneers of tourism in the Yucatan. Together with his daughter, Carmen, they converted the family home into a charming hotel, adding a new block to the side of the property which now houses the majority of rooms.
The original part of the building is characterised, by a lovely central courtyard and a peaceful, rear garden that houses a small swimming pool.
Throughout the main building one can find antiques and local artefacts, all chosen by Don Fernando and Carmen, and which give the property a personal and intimate atmosphere missing from most hotels.
Other features of the Casa del Balam include a bar, restaurant, shop and tours desk.
The 51 rooms at the hotel are comfortable rather than luxurious and all are light and spacious with attractive, tiled floors. Standard rooms all feature 2 double beds while upgrades are available to Honeymoon rooms which are slightly larger and come with a King-sized bed.
