Hotel Castelmar
Campeche, Mexico
Heritage
Located just a short walk from Campeche’s main square, the building that houses the Hotel Castelmar dates back to the very start of the 19th century and was initially used as army barracks.
Even today, the entire roof is edged by military style turrets although the inspiration for the bright blue external paintwork probably owes more to its location just a few blocks back from the sea.
Although it has been a hotel for well over a hundred years now, the current owners only took over the property in 2004 when it was closed for a complete renovation. Today, the Hotel Castelmar is a lovely, unpretentious heritage style property with a strong local flavour and bags of charm.
Together with its colonial heritage, and especially its beautiful tilework, the other great attraction of the Hotel Castelmar is its open spaces, both the lovely open-air central courtyard and neighbouring outdoor swimming pool.
The 24 rooms have a strong colonial feel to them with original tiled floors and high ceilings with cedar beams. Although not luxurious they are perfectly comfortable.
