Otherwise known as the Antigua Estación del Ferrocarril, Granada’s old train station hasn’t seen any action for many a year but is a popular visit for both train enthusiasts and casual explorers.
Located in the north of the town, at the top of Calle Altavesada, the old train station is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Parque Central. As with most of Granada, Calle Altravesda is lined the entire way with attractive, colonial and colonial-esque buildings so, even if you have no interest in trains, it’s an enjoyable walk.
The old train station is, in itself, an attractive old building but sadly underutilized with absolutely no information about either the history of the station or rail travel in Nicaragua.

While train travel in Nicaragua dates back to the 1880s, with Granada connected to the network in 1886, lack of investment, preference for travel by road and natural disasters led to a steady decline in the second half of the 20th century.
Declining passenger numbers, coupled with natural disasters such as earthquakes and flooding, meant that most lines were closed in 1993 with the very last line shut in 2001.
While there has been talk of a new rail line from Managua to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific coast, this seems somewhat fanciful so, for now at least, enthusiasts will have to limit themselves to a bit of nostalgia at Granada’s old train station.
