One of Belize’s key tourist attractions, albeit some 43 miles offshore, the Great Blue Hole is a giant submarine sinkhole.

The southern-most of Belize’s established holiday destinations, but still just a 30-minute flight from Belize City, Placencia is essentially a 16-mile peninsula with the Caribbean on one side and a large lagoon on the other.
Rocky the what? You’ll have to excuse my ignorance but, until we finally met, I had absolutely no idea what a Coatimundi was. In fact, the word Coatimundi is just one of many names given to the same animal and better known as a member of the raccoon family.

Located in Cayo district in western Belize, and close to the border crossing with Guatemala, the town of San Ignacio is a popular base for visiting a variety of attractions, including Caracol and Actun Tunichil Muknal.

As a small country, one of the many joys of taking a holiday to Belize are the short travel distances involved as well as the sheer ease of travel. On my most recent visit to the country, my first internal journey, from Corozal to Caye Ambergris, took under an hour.
Atop a steep hill above San Ignacio is the smartest hotel in town (smart enough for the Queen to have been a guest on her visit to Belize in February 1994), the San Ignacio Resort Hotel; and very nice it is too.
Go to any restaurant or food-shack in Belize and you can be pretty certain of one thing being on the menu – a Marie Sharp’s hot pepper sauce or other condiment.
If you live in the UK / mainland Europe, and are planning a Belize holiday, the first thing you will discover is that not only are there no direct flights but there aren’t even any same day connecting flights on the outbound journey.
Although not especially busy, the land border with Mexico is a popular entry point into Belize and relatively straightforward
